A fun hour at the museum
I spent a couple of hours wandering around this beautifully renovated museum. It tells the fascinating story of Kenya, from its early days, through colonialism, to the Mau Mau era, to Independence, and all that that has meant in terms of progress. They have some lovely exhibits, including a huge room devoted to all the birds of Africa – and there are many! There is also a large gallery showing Joy Adamson’s (of Elsa the Lion fame) paintings. Who knew she was such a fine artist and many of her works have become reference pieces. I was there on a Saturday morning – perhaps not the best choice of days as there was an extremely large and vocal group of primary school kids! But never mind, the museum was big enough that I managed to avoid them most of the time! And good for Kenya, showing their children their heritage. Great museum. It is open-air and has many interactive parts. I loved all of the exhibits. I give it a 4-star review instead of 5 because they have absolutely NOTHING about Wangari Maathai in this museum. That was disappointing as she was Kenyan and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. There were a lot of interesting things to see in a reasonably small area. My favorite was the art/photo gallery. But I found the entire museum interesting. I normally would have skipped the guide but was glad to have all the information she shared with us. The restaurant outside was nice and the gift shop was reasonably priced.
