About Us

The Safari Sevens is open to international representative sides, professional clubs, amateur clubs, invitational teams, university and school teams.Initially held at the RFUEA Ground, home of the  Kenya Rugby Union, the tournament was moved to the Nyayo National Stadium in 2010 and 2011 and then held in the 60,000 seat Moi International Sports Centre from 2012 through 2017. Due to declining spectators and sponsor interest, the event was moved back to the RFUEA in 2018.This is not exactly a festival, but this event makes this list due to its well-deserved hype. Rugby teams from different countries battle it out in games that are scheduled throughout the weekend until a final winner is announced. There are musical performances in between the games and plenty of food available outside the stadium.

Great crowd, rugby and food

5/ 5

Rugby is my favorite sport, having played it while I was in my O levels, I would never miss this sport for anything. Safaricom 7s is run by the Kenya Rugby Football Union. The competition is one of Africa’s largest sevens tournaments and is contested by Kenya as well as numerous other nations and club teams. It is traditionally held at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi, but last year 2021 was held in Nyayo Stadium. Considered Africa’s premier 7-a-side tournament, the ‘Safaricom Sevens’ gives the rugby enthusiast an opportunity to enjoy extensive competition whilst immersing themselves in the distinctive Kenyan culture. With Kenya known throughout the IRB 7s fraternity as having the most fun-loving and raucous supporters, the ‘Safari Sevens’ is played out in an awesome intimate carnival atmosphere rivaling other destinations. This rugby tournament, named after a former chairman of the Kenya Harlequin FC, Alex Christie, has been running annually since 1964. The three-day event draws fans from all parts of the city and beyond. Fans sit glued to the grandstand bleachers around the lush green pitch, enjoying thrilling rugby action. In addition to the music playing in the background and rugby games on the pitch, fans had a lot to enjoy in the periphery. An adventure of a different kind was taking place behind the arena. Food booths included a mobile food truck with sumptuous burgers and hot dogs, and sizzling barbecues to satisfy the hungry crowd while Safaricom’s booth offered entertaining dances and music. Fior di Latte my favorite brought something different to the event. Its booth had farm-fresh gelato ice cream in a variety of flavors such as dark chocolate gelato and wild berry gelato. East African Breweries quenched fans with the leading alcoholic brand-Tusker. Teetotallers had a variety of drinks too. This should not be missed for anything especially if you are a rugby enthusiast!

Ultimate rugby experience

4.17/ 5

Kenyans love their rugby and Safaricom 7s provides an adrenaline-rushing experience for rugby lovers. It is a 3 day festival with games flowing back to back from Friday to the finals on Sunday. I haven’t missed the finals for the past 3 days. The ticket goes for KES1500 and covers for three days. It is usually held in the RFUEA Grounds along Ngong Road about 8km from the city center. On all the days, the crowd is packed but especially on Sunday. The tournament is usually on an elimination basis. The best of the best battle it out for a chance at the finals and the cash prize. I enjoy the energy that is usually on the stands. Fans with their team jerseys celebrating at the top of their lungs. Lots of beer and music. There is nothing quite like it.
