The new IMAX Theater which is under the Century Cinemax group of cinemas brings to two the number of IMAX theaters in the country. Kenya still remains the only country with an IMAX theater in Eastern Africa.

IMAX, which is an acronym for Image Maximum boasts the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution. An IMAX screen is approximately 17 x 9 meters which makes it equal to thirteen 51” plasma screens in one hence making the digital experience from an IMAX projection that much more exhilarating with its crystal clear images. The IMAX projection system also boasts an avant-garde digital sound giving the consumer a unique experience.

IMAX is located on the first floor of the mall. Undoubtedly the best movie theater in Nairobi!!! The audio and graphics technology will definitely make you feel part of the movie. I just wish they had a wider selection of movies. I have enjoyed every visit to this place. I prefer their offer rates for Weekend Mornings. The location of the mall is also easily accessible from the highway. They have reduced sittings as a precaution because of Covid 19 but they are usually not very crowded on weekdays anyway. The rates for the movies are great and the experience both audio and visual is great. IMAXGarden City is ideal for families with young children. Enough parking both for handicaps, and eateries are available. great shopping and movies experience COVID rules are always observed.

This is by far my best cinema in Nairobi. It’s located on the first floor of Garden City Mall. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been there to the point where I have two 3D glasses at my place. If you don’t have a pair, you pay kes 200 at the cinema. They have offers for students and if you check the schedule, movies are cheaper early in the morning as compared to later on in the day. The number of times my partner and I have been the only ones in the cinema at 8 am is uncountable. They have two screens at GCM and that’s where most movies premier. The cinema halls are also the biggest in Kenya if I’m not wrong. I remember when Black Panther premiered and everyone was in Ankara clothing. What an experience! The best cinema around.

Just two years ago the Wakanda,I mean black panther film was released. This to date remains one of my very favorite movies and I attribute my love for it partly to the perfect film that it was and also to the perfect movie experience that I got from Imax. Imax Garden City has been my go to movie location and just like Wakanda is forever Imax is forever to me when it comes to movies. When they officially had the premiere we even got dressed in little African outfits trying to get the whole Wakanda spirit up and running. It seems just like yesterday. Our movie tickets on that day were a little expensive because it was the first day. On other normal days I pay 800/= and it gets even better on their student Thursday’s where I pay 400/=. As long as you go with your student ID you get to enjoy this deal. When we entered the theatre, it really was state of the art. The seats were well spaced and the whole place was clean and well kept. When the movie started playing the audio and the visuals were just perfect. The audio was heart pounding with perfectly timed sound. The speakers are also placed all around in perfect alignment making no seat experience a disadvantage whatsoever. The visuals really had this brilliance and clarity to it making the experience a whole lot better. When you combine all this with the 3D glasses, the heightened realism is one for the books. All this things combined is really what creates what is commonly referred to as the Imax experience. You can either choose to carry your own 3D or rent some that are usually provided at the entrance. I don’t really know the rates because I’ve always had mine for the longest time but it shouldn’t cost more than 300/=. There is also snacks sold at the entrance and you can grab a thing or two. There is also a lounge where you can sit as you wait for your movie to start.

I personally had my first 3D movie experience at the Gardencity Imax Branch when they had the movie premier for the Avengers-End Game and the experience was just mind-blowing to say the least. Imax is located at a corner of the first floor of the mall neighboring several fast food outlets. When you walk in, you will first encounter the reception which has couches to sit and wait if you’re early for your movie and several vending machines. The attendants at the reception are so friendly and patient especially when you haven’t t decided on a movie yet . They also give their views and advice you on which one to watch based on your own personal preference. The 3D glasses are sold just outside the entrance to the movie usually just 300KES and you keep them for your next cinema visit. They have social media sites where you can catch their updates on what is currently showing in case you are a pre-planner so you can find out if anything you’d fancy watching is available before you go there. I find this highly convenient-especially their instagram page @centurycinemaxkenya. What i love most about them is their Student Thursday offers whereby on Thursdays , students get movie discounts having their tickets go for 500KES inclusive of salted popcorn. If you fit the non-student criteria no need to feel left out because they have their tickets still inclusive of salted popcorn going for 550KES on Manic Mondays! On choosy Tuesday tickets go for 800KES but get this, they are inclusive of popcorn, a soda and an option of either nachos or a hotdog. To top it all off they put reclinerbseats in their new Sarit centre branch. Cool right? So tell me, who would want to miss out on such a wonderful experience!

For film nerds, watching a movie on the big screen is the only right way to do it. And IMAX theatres are world renowned for their sound and picture quality. So, when “Spiderman: Far From Home” was released, we knew we had to experience it at Century IMAX – Garden City. Being the penny-pinching students we are?, we went on Thursday for the “Student Thursday” offer. The ticket prices were KSh500, and came with salted popcorn as an accompaniment. If you don’t have IMAX 3D glasses, you’ll be charged an extra KSh200. So, if you have IMAX 3D glasses at home remember to carry them. Our movie started at around 7pm, and as usual we arrived 5 minutes late. But luckily, we had bought our tickets online and went straight into the theatre. I strongly advice buying the tickets online, as the lines at the ticketing booth tend to get quite long, especially when a popular movie is playing. Movie tickets often sell out before the lines clear too. The atmosphere in the theatre was good with minimum disturbances and the theatre was clean. IMAX screens are usually big and Century IMAX didn’t disappoint. The staff often boast that it’s the biggest IMAX screen in Kenya. But in my opinion, the sound quality was the more impressive aspect of their theatre. Their speakers are the loudest and clearest theatre speakers I have ever heard. When the movie was finished, we were all impressed not only, by the movie, but also by the sound and picture quality of the theatre. I highly recommend Century IMAX to film nerds and audiophiles out there.
