As a parent, you’re constantly on the look for fun activities for your kids so that you can spend time with them or keep them from being on their gadgets 24/7. It can be a daunting task but luckily, Nakuru has a number of activities and places that you and your kids will enjoy. Here’s a list of 10 for you to choose from:
1) Lake Nakuru National Park
You can organize a game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park during the weekend. Its wide ecological diversity, surrounding rocky escarpments, and picturesque ridges form a unique national park ideal for bird watching, hiking, picnic, and game drives. On the game drive, you can get to see Buffalos, Zebras, Impalas, Giraffes, Baboons, Waterbucks, and a number of the Big Five. Also, the view from Baboon Cliff is spectacular.
2) Lord Egerton Castle
Lord Egerton Castle is a beautiful work of art built in the name of love. The history behind it being built is quite the story. The tour will take you through the numerous rooms which have the exact furniture and everything else that Lord Egerton used while living there. Afterward, you can have a picnic and play games on the lawn.
3) Menengai Crater
Menengai Crater is the second largest volcanic crater in the world, standing at about 2,490 meters high. It features beautiful caves, nature trails, picnic spots, and beautiful viewpoints. It’s also believed to be the battleground for the Maasai back in the day. You can choose to hike it and make it a whole day’s activity or drive up to the crater’s summit and have a picnic.
4) Kenana Knitters
Kenana supports the women of the local community by directly providing them with a source of income. The women at Kenana Knitters make unique hand-woven toys that look good and are unique. Each item also bears the signature of the woman that made it. Experience the process, mingle with the women and kids there, and make sure to get a few toys for your kids too.
5) Fishpark Resort
Fishpark Resort is an immersive and fun plan for you and your kids during the weekend. It’s located approximately 25 minutes from Nakuru CBD, just before Shiners Boys High School. You can take part in activities such as boat riding, horse riding, military-type obstacles course, zip-lining, and other fun outdoor activities. Imagine your kids’ excitement as they zip line over a pond. After the activities, you can have nyama choma at their restaurant which is within the same compound.
6) Hyrax Hill Museum
Discovered by the Leakeys, Hyrax Hill prehistoric site is an important Neolithic site in Kenya that has yielded some of the oldest iron age artifacts known from East Africa. The main attractions include; an excavation site, a picnic site, a nature trail, and viewpoints of Lake Nakuru. Hiking the hill will have you and your kids breaking a little sweat while you bond over stories.
7) Kariandusi Pre-Historic Site
The site dates back to the stone era, about a million years ago. Hundreds of Bolas and Acheulean hand axes and stone artifacts have been unearthed here. There’s a museum that houses the findings of the Kariandusi Archeological Site. You’ll get to experience bird watching, a hiking nature trail, and a monumental church building. It’s a 30-minute drive from Nakuru CBD but the drive is worth it.
8) Merica Hotel
Nothing beats going swimming during the weekend. As a parent, you get to kick back and enjoy your drink while your kid plays in the pool. Merica Hotel is the perfect hotel for this. First, it’s conveniently located in the heart of Nakuru CBD. Second, the pool is child-friendly, and lastly, it has the ambiance you need to relax.
9) Hotel Kunste
Hotel Kunste has been a favorite for parents and their kids for the longest time. It’s located approximately 5 minutes from Nakuru CBD, adjacent to Shell Petrol Station on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. For the kids, there’s a Lunar Park where they can do bike riding, merry-go-round, bouncing castles, football, face-painting, and a miniature water slide in the pool. Once you take them there, you’ll never hear the end of it!
10) Golden Life Mall
Golden Life Mall is the newest mall in Nakuru. It’s located near the CBD, just off the Nakuru-Kisumu highway. Let’s say you’re going shopping at Chandarana, you can drop your child off at their arcade where they can try out VR gaming. Afterward, you can have lunch at Origins Coffee. They make really good milkshakes and pizza.
