Going on dates is quite important in a romantic relationship. Sharing special moments and creating memories that’ll last a lifetime is the bedrock of relationships. At times, it can be difficult to plan a date and choose a place or activity that both you and your partner will enjoy. To help you out, here’s a list of 10 date ideas you can try out in Nakuru.
1) Afternoon cocktails at Little Garden Bistro
Little Garden Bistro is a beautiful bar and restaurant located in Milimani. The premise was a residential house that was converted into a bistro. They have manicured lawns that have pods/tents each hosting about 4 to 6 people. It rarely gets packed and they play soft music all through. Make your way there in the afternoon and enjoy your cocktails while taking in the ambiance and music. Cocktails start from Ksh 500 only.
2) Coffee date at Origin Coffee
Origin Coffee is a new cafe that’s on the ground floor of Golden Life Mall. It’s the perfect cafe for coffee dates. The decor is rustic and the walls are decorated with paintings. The lights are warm and dim which gives the cafe a romantic ambiance. Take your date and enjoy good coffee, soft music, and each other’s company. By the time you realize it, you’ll have been there for hours.
3) Picnic at Menengai Crater
The Menengai Crater is an extinct volcano located on the northern side of Nakuru. It’s also the second-largest surviving volcanic crater in the world. There’s an exciting hiking trail but for a date, you can try something different. Pack a picnic basket and carry a Bluetooth speaker. Drive through the forest till the crater’s summit. Lay out a blanket on the edge of the crater and have a romantic afternoon with your date. Don’t leave till the sun sets on the horizon. It’s a glorious site.
4) Liveband at Papprigano
If you both enjoy live music and some ambiance, then Papprigano should be the plan for your next date. Every Sunday, they have a band playing from 3 pm till about 10 pm. They start out with a jazz set and build up the tempo as it goes. By 7 pm, you’ll find yourselves dancing to Sauti Sol’s musical acoustics. The best part is, there’s no entrance fee and it rarely gets packed.
5) Diner at The Alps Hotel
The Alps Hotel is one of the most classy hotels in Nakuru. It’s located in the leafy suburbs of Milimani and the ambiance is unmatched. Call beforehand and make a reservation at their restaurant, Masala Kraft, to avoid any inconvenience. You can choose to dine in the restaurant, by the poolside, or on the terrace overlooking Nakuru City and Lake Nakuru. The meals are a bit pricy but you get value for your money plus the ambiance is everything.
6) Game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru is a salty water lake located 4 km south of Nakuru CBD. Its wide ecological diversity, surrounding rocky escapements, and eye-catching ridges come together to form a one-of-a-kind national park that is ideal for hiking, picnics, bird watching, and game drives. You have two options for the game drive; you can hire a tour van plus a guide or you can drive yourself through the park. I’d advise the former because the guides know the best spots to see the wildlife plus there is no chance of getting lost.
7) Museum tour of Hyrax Hill Museum
Especially for introverts, museum dates are perfect because it’s quiet and there’s little to no chance of meeting lots of people. In Nakuru, you can check out Hyrax Hill Museum which houses iron age artifacts such as; iron bracelets and metal tools, along with cutting instruments forged from obsidian rock (the one that looks like glass) belonging to a civilization that used to live there more than 300 years ago. The museum is set in an excavation site that depicts the settlement of prehistoric people about 3,000 years ago. Other attractions include; a picnic site, camping site, nature trail, excavated remains of 3 settlements, and a viewpoint of Lake Nakuru.
8) Watching a play at Nakuru Players Theatre
How about trying out something different for your next date such as; watching a play, poetry, spoken word, or dances? It’s a much-needed break from usual dining together or conversing over drinks. You’ll also finish the date having a certain appreciation for performing artists and the work they put into their art. Nakuru Players Theatre is the hub for performing arts in Nakuru and the talent on display is out of this world. The best part is that the entrance is usually Ksh 500 or less.
9) Burgers at Lennz Pizza
Fast food dates are also fun and tasty ones too. You and your date can stop by Lennz Pizza and eat the best burgers that Nakuru has to offer (in my opinion). They offer a variety of flavors for burgers and they cost from Ksh 550. There’s plenty of dining space and the service is fast. They also have an offer on Wednesday for 2 burgers for the price of 1. There’s no reason not to treat your taste buds to the scrumptiousness that is Lennz Pizza’s burgers.
10) Tour of Lord Egerton Castle
Imagine a romantic date at a castle with an almost tragic but interesting love story behind it. The castle was built by Lord Egerton for his fiance who complained about living in a ‘not-so-majestic’ house while visiting him in Kenya. After building the castle, she left him claiming that she could not live in a house with 13 rooms (an unlucky number in her culture). Lord Egerton vowed to never have another romantic relationship till his death. The tour is interesting and later on, you can have a picnic on the manicured lawns of the premise.
I am a charismatic 23-year-old student at the University of Nairobi. I enjoy traveling be it planned or impromptu. I also enjoy partying. I'll be there with a drink in my cup all through the night, chasing the sun. Life's too short not to choose the fast lane. Carpe diem!
