This town located about 167Km from Nairobi used to be the headquarters of Rift Valley. This helped it to develop into the entertainment hub of the region, with numerous hotels, clubs, and parks. There are a lot of things to do in this town, so I have made a list of the Top 10 Things to do in Nakuru County.
1) Visit Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is located on the outskirts of Nakuru town, about a 30-minute drive from the Nakuru town center. The park has a large variety of animal species including the endangered southern white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, leopards, and lions. Lake Nakuru is also within this park and you get a chance to view the beautiful flamingos from the beaches of the lake. Lake Nakuru National Park’s entry fees are KSh800 for adult citizens and residents, and KSh200 for children.
2) Party with friends at Chili’s
Chili’s is one of Nakuru City’s newest clubs and my personal favourite. Popular among celebrities visiting Nakuru, the energy and ambience at Chili’s is hard to find in any other club in the city. Famous DJs often play here, with world-renowned Dj, Joe Mfalme, having played here several times. The music at Chili’s is amazing and you are guaranteed to have a fun weekend whenever you party here. Chili’s is located on Oginga Odinga Ave, next to Naivas Downtown. Next time you party in Nakuru make sure to check it out.
3) Hike Menengai Crater
Menengai Crater is located on the northern side of Nakuru town, about a thirty-minute drive from the Nakuru town-center. The park has a really good hiking trail with beautiful views of the crater and the town. Lake Nakuru is also visible from the peak of the crater. The entrance fee to the crater is KSh200.
4) Party at Platinum 7D club
Platinum 7D is one of the most popular clubs in Nakuru Town. Nairobians often flock to this club on weekends to enjoy the good music and have drinks with their friends. Its location along the Old Nairobi Rd makes it easy to find and accessible if you traveling from Nairobi. The alcohol prices in this club are similar to clubs in Nairobi.
5) Visit Lord Egerton Castle
If you are interested in the history of colonial Kenya or love dark romance stories, a visit to Lord Egerton Castle should be on your Nakuru itinerary. This castle built in the 1930s by Lord Maurice Egerton, the last baron of the Royal Tatton lineage, is an incredible piece of architecture. Known as the castle with no prince, this mansion is surrounded by beautiful green lawns and gardens, perfect for photoshoots and wedding receptions.
6) Bird watching at Lake Elementaita
Lake Elementaita is a soda lake located about 50 kilometers from Nakuru town. The lake is a host to over 400 bird species including flamingos, which feed on the lake’s crustacean and insect larvae and on its suspended blue-green algae. The lake shoes are graved by gazelles, warthogs, and zebras. To the southern end of the lake, you will find hot springs.
7) Tour Hyrax hill prehistoric site and museum
Hyrax Hill is an archaeological site located about 4Km from Nakuru town. The area contains a museum and three excavation sites. The museum depicts the life of prehistoric people who lived here thousands of years ago. Hyrax Hill museum not only displays artifacts found at these excavation sites, but also artifacts from other sites in central Rift Valley. The sites around the hill belong to different time periods dating back to the Neolithic period. If archaeology is interesting to you, you will enjoy a visit to Hyrax hill.
8) Coffee at Moca Loca Coffee and Lounge – Nakuru
After a day of touring Nakuru, Moca Loca Coffee and Lounge is the perfect place to unwind. The lounge, located along Kenyatta Avenue, offers a wide range of meals from salads to pizzas and fries. The coffee here is also extremely good and you will be tempted to return here for more. Moca Loca also has really good music with deejays, karaoke, and live bands performing on different days of the week.
