The 2022 edition of the WRC Kenya Safari Rally is finally here. And all roads will be leading to Naivasha. Being my birthday weekend too, I’ve planned many activities during my stay in Naivasha. Other than the rally there will be a lot of music festivals and after-parties happening in a span of two days. To help you sort through the noise I have prepared a list of “Top 10 Activities to do During the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha” to spruce up your weekend.
1. Attend the Safari Rally
I know… this is an obvious entry. But it is best to finish up watching the rally early in the day before all the parties start and the crowds start getting drunk and rowdy. The Soysambu 1 stage is my favourite and the cars pass by at around 8 am. Another favourite stage is Sleeping Warrior 2 which happens at 4 pm.
2. Attend WRCKorogaFestival
The 2020 Naivasha Edition of The Koroga Love Festival headlined by Diamond Platnumz is my favourite Koroga Festival to date. It was the last Koroga Festival I attended, just weeks before COVID hit Kenya and the World was shut down. Lucky for me this edition will be during the Safari Rally, saving me the expense of having to travel to Naivasha twice. It will be headlined by Tarrus Riley, so I know it’s going to be a blast. The Sunday advanced tickets are going for KSh 2500 and Gate Tickets KSh 3000.
3. Attend SunSet Village Pres. Gondwana Ke
Hosted on the shores of Lake Naivasha on Sunday, this is the event I’m looking most forward to. With the backdrop of the lake and Amapiano playing in the background, this is bound to be a memorable experience. Advanced tickets are going for KSh 1500 and Gate Tickets KSh 2000. Kwa-Zulu Natal’s Thandi Draai will be the headliner supported by Suraj.
4. Visit Hell’s Gate National Park
Hell’s Gate National Park contains three campsites: Endachata, Ol Dubai, and Naiburta. After a day of watching the rally, you should treat yourself to a camping experience at one of these camps. All of these camps have beautiful views of the landscape. And since the rally will be held inside Hell’s Gate you’ll have a unique vantage point to watch the race. At Hell’s gate, there are a lot of activities to do including rock climbing, bike riding among the wildlife, and a relaxing bath in a Geothermal spa. You can camp here for a few days without ever getting bored. This is why it makes it to my “Top 10 Activities to do During the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha” list.
5. Game Walk at Crescent Island Game Sanctuary
If you want to have a more peaceful experience after watching the rally, then a game walk at Crescent Island is for you. Here you’ll get to see giraffes, buffalos, zebras, hippos, hyenas, bat-eared foxes and pythons. It sounds dangerous but it’s a lot of fun. Entry charges are KSh 800 for Kenyan Citizens.
6. Camping at Camp Carnelly’s
Camp Carnelly‘s, located on the shores of Lake Naivasha, is one of the most popular camping sites among Nairobians due to its affordability. City dwellers flock here every weekend. You can either bring your own tent or rent one. Bandas are also available if you don’t want to sleep under the night sky. The campsite has a ping pong table and volleyball court if you wish to entertain yourself with sports. A bar and restaurant are also present.
7. A Stay at a Luxury Campsite – Kiboko Luxury Camp
If you have money to spend and want to enjoy the finer things in life, then Kiboko Luxury Camp is the perfect place to do so after a long day watching the rally in the sun. There are eight luxury tents in Kiboko Luxury Camp, with four facing the lake, offering you an incredible view of Lake Naivasha. The best thing about this campsite is you get close to nature. Giraffes, waterbucks, and zebras are frequent visitors to the campsite. Kiboko Luxury Camp has lots of hippos too, with most of them staying just a few yards away from the tents. You can hear them throughout the night, and you get a chance to watch them during the day from your private veranda. Boat rides are also available and I recommend you take them. The food here is also exquisite. This is why it makes it to my “Top 10 Activities to do During the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha” list.
8. A Relaxing day at Olkaria Geothermal Spa
After a long sweaty day watching the rally or dancing at one of the events, nothing beats a long hot dip inside the natural spa at Olkaria. The water here has balneological effects and you’ll go back to Nairobi feeling refreshed.
9. A Stay at a Luxury Hotel – Enashipai Resort & Spa
You shouldn’t have to sleep inside a campsite if you don’t like the outdoors. And Enashipai Resort & Spa is ready to accommodate you if you want to indulge in a little bit of luxury after watching the race. Here you can enjoy relaxing massages at Siyara Spa while your kids play at the indoor kids’ play centre.
10. A Boat Ride in Lake Naivasha
The perfect way to finish a weekend at Lake Naivasha is with a boat ride around the lake. It’s extremely relaxing and gives you a chance to enjoy nature before you head back to the hustle and bustle of the city.
This closes my “Top 10 Activities to do During the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha” list. Hope to see you guys in Naivasha. Comment below on what you will be doing in Naivasha this weekend.
