Holidays are few and far apart, and with Madaraka Day finally here, there are a lot of things you can do to enjoy the freedom our ancestors fought so hard for. With this year’s holiday being on a Wednesday, most people are tempted to stay at home and relax. So, I’ve decided to make a “Top 10 List” to help you guys out in choosing an activity. Long weekend getaways are obviously out of the question since you’ll be back at work/school on Thursday. However, don’t worry, my “Top 10 List” has enough activities to keep you entertained the whole day.
1. Partying at Deja Vu Lounge

Kenyans really enjoy partying, and there is no better place to do it than Deja Vu Lounge. It is currently the most popular club in Nairobi. The DJs are incredible, the ladies beautiful, and the drinks are always flowing. The parties here go on until sunrise, and you are guaranteed to have a good time on Madaraka Day. The prices are however high, so come with your purse full.
2. Ziplining at The Forest with Friends

I’m an adrenaline junkie. So naturally, The Forest is one of my favourite places to go and have fun with my friends. There are a lot of activities to do here from ziplining to paintballing. I especially enjoy their zipline which is one of the longest and highest ziplines in Africa. However, for this activity, you’ll need to drive one hour from the city. This allows you to make it into a road trip too. The Forest also has a beautiful restaurant on a cliff overlooking the Arbedares Forest, perfect for dates. If you love nature they also have mountain biking and horseback riding. And for the physically fit, archery is also available. Madaraka Day spent here will be worth it.
3. Paintballing at Paintball Fury

If you don’t like travelling long distances to get your adrenaline kick, then Paintball Fury is perfect for you. Located at The Waterfront Mall in Karen, this is my favourite paintball arena in Nairobi. Paintballing is the perfect activity for large groups of friends/families. You’re guaranteed to have lots of fun and laughs during your paintball match.
4. Dinner at Bambino

If you want to have a quiet and intimate evening with your family and friends, then Bambino is the perfect restaurant for that. Located in Westlands, it is easily accessible from anywhere in Nairobi. The soft background music, beautiful décor and warm lighting create the perfect ambience for a peaceful meal.
5. A Movie at Century IMAX

If you are a movie junkie then going to IMAX this Wednesday is a NO BRAINER. Top Gun Maverick, one of the best movies of 2022, is showing the whole day. So you better get your tickets before they are sold out. See you there today.
6. Cocktails at Café Kaya

Café Kaya, located at Waiyaki Way, sells the best and strongest cocktails I’ve ever drunk. Their happy hour deal is also incredible. For the price of one, you get three cocktails. The pizza here is tasty and they have vegetarian pizza for the animal lovers out there. If you are planning on a Madaraka Day date, this restaurant is also perfect for that.
7. A Spa Date at Kaya Spa + Studio

Kaya Spa + Studio is “One of the Hottest urban retreats in the world” as per the Condé Nast Traveller. And it truly deserves that accolade. Located in the ultra-modern 5-star Tribe Hotel, Kaya Spa + Studio offers a wide range of spa treatments in a luxurious and sophisticated setting inspired by the nearby Kaya forests. The treatment rooms at Kaya are spacious and large enough for couple’s therapies. Furthermore, Kaya’s therapists are all certified and trained in modern and ancient massage techniques. They are arguably among the best in Kenya and offer world-class massages. If you want a relaxing spa day Kaya Spa + Studio is one of the best places to get it
8. Visit Karura Forest

If you are a nature lover then this is your chance to visit Karura Forest. Located on Kiambu Road, and Limuru Road this forest provides the perfect environment for a wide range of activities. From meditation, yoga, hiking and mountain biking. There are also a lot of places to explore here such as the caves, Lily Lake and waterfalls.
9. Pizza with Friends at La Terraza

If you are a foodie then La Terraza, located at the Greenhouse Mall on Ngong Road, needs to be on your Madaraka Day to-do list. The pizza at La Terrazza is made from authentic Italian ingredients and always leaves me craving for more. La Terrazza offers scenic rooftop views of Nairobi, which creates the perfect ambience that is great for dates. The price of pizza ranges from KSh 950 to KSh 1500. This is expensive compared to other restaurants in Nairobi. However, the tasty pizza coupled with the service and beautiful location makes it worth it.
10. Water Sports at Maji Magic Aqua Park

If you have kids then I guarantee they’ll have fun in this water park. As long as they know how to swim. Located in Waterfront Mall – Karen, this is Africa’s first inflatable aqua park. Maji Magic Aqua Park has a lot of fun activities such as ‘stand up paddle boarding’ and bumper boats. Exploring the course and scaling obstacles is one of the most fun things to do in this aqua park, and you and your family are guaranteed to have a good time as you race against each other.
