The holiday season is finally here. And after a year filled with uncertainties such as the COVID-19 pandemic and a general election, Nairobians will finally get a chance to blow off some steam. However, with a looming economic downturn, it is wiser to celebrate New Year’s eve on a budget. So I’ve made an “Uzamart New Year’s Eve Event Guide. The Best Events and things to do.” to help you out.
1. Enjoy Nyama Choma with Family and Friends
Eating Nyama Choma is one of Kenyans’ favourite pass times. And on New Year’s eve, Kenyans will be flocking to their favourite Nyama Choma joints to feast before the festivities begin. Some of the most popular joints are Njuguna’s Place, The Carnivore Restaurant and Ole Polos. Check out my “Top 10 Nyama Choma Joints in Nairobi” before deciding on which one to visit.
2. Visit an Amusement Park with Family and Friends
The last two decades have seen a boom in the number of amusement parks in Nairobi. The most popular ones are located in malls. However, my favourite ones are the standalone parks. Nairobi’s amusement parks have a lot of activities that you can enjoy with your family such as waterparks, race tracks, bumper cars, rock climbing walls, ferries wheels, paintball and ice skating rinks. Check out my “Top 10 Amusement Parks in Nairobi” blog and “20 Things to do with Kids in Nairobi (2022)”.
3. Watch a Movie at the Cinema
Nairobi is one of the best cities in Africa to live in if you are a cinephile. With the most modern and largest cinema halls in Africa, there isn’t much more you could ask for. Nairobi has two IMAX Cinemas, multiple Dolby Atmos cinemas, and multiple 20th Century Fox Cinemas including one which is a drive-in. The largest cinema screen in East and Central Africa has recently been opened at The Two Rivers Mall surpassing the Two IMAX screens which had held that title for a decade. Check out my “Top 10 Cinemas in Nairobi” list for more information.
4. Go Hiking
If your family and friends are into fitness, hiking is one of the best ways to spend your holiday. Hiking trips have become popular weekend getaways in Kenya and this has led to the construction of many hiking trails and camps. Some of the best trails are on Mt. Kenya and Aberdare Range. However, these hikes are hard and require more than a month of preparation to tackle them. Easier trails that can be hiked by anyone are the Oloolua Nature Trail and Karura Forest in Nairobi. These are preferable as holiday hikes as they take less than a day. Check out my “Top 10 Hiking Spots Around Nairobi (2022)” list.
5. Go Bowling with your Family and Friends
Bowling is one of the most exciting sports to play with a large group of people. The fact that it’s an individual sport that can be played by a large number of people makes it very competitive and perfect for families. My favourite bowling alley is the Village Bowl in Village Market. However, many popular bowling alleys have been constructed around Nairobi that you can check out.
6. Go to a Music Concert with Friends
Every New Year’s Eve there are hundreds of concerts happening in Nairobi. They range from free to paid and from concerts headlined by local artists to those headlined by international artists. However, it’s best to book them early since New Year’s Eve tickets sell out fast. Here are the “Top Events in Nairobi in December 2022“.
7. Watch the Fireworks Display
One of the best and most unique things about New Year’s day is the fireworks displays across the city. Everyone try’s to outperform each other and every year the fireworks displays get bigger. Find a high place to watch the fireworks with your spouse or friends with a drink by your side. I know of a cliff from where you can see the whole city including the CBD, Westlands and Upperhill. This is where I plan to watch the fireworks display this year. Avid readers of my blogs may know where it is, maybe I’ll see you there.
8. Attend an Amapiano Event at The Winning Post
Amapiano music has become popular in Kenya over the last 2 years. And The Winning Post has been at the forefront of this genre’s foray into the country. The Winning Post brings the biggest South African deejays on almost a weekly basis and I can’t wait to see their lineup for New Year’s Eve. This is why it makes it into my “Uzamart New Year’s Eve Event Guide. The Best Events and Things To Do” list.
9. Attend a church mass/service
A lot of churches in Nairobi usually have a night mass/service to usher in the new year. It’s a fulfilling way to spend your new years eve. Since some churches usually run charity drives during this period. This is why it makes it into my Uzamart New Year’s Eve Event Guide.
10. Achieve Your Last 2022 Resolution
It’s during New Year’s Eve that most people start making their New Year’s resolutions. But it is also your last chance to achieve any Resolutions you made in 2022. So pick an easy 2022 Resolution to achieve so that you can end the year with a bang. If you have achieved all your 2022 resolutions, pick a 2023 resolution to achieve before the year even starts. And if you are some kind of New Year’s resolution purist who won’t attempt to tackle your resolutions before the new year starts. Then you can simply try out a new thing on the final day of the year. Here is a list of things you can try “Top 10 Activities for Adrenaline Junkies (2022)”
This ends my “Uzamart New Year’s Eve Event Guide. The Best Events and things to do” blog. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
